Dr. Garfinkel graduated cum laude from New York University and went on to earn his Medical Degree from the Cornell University Medical College in 1986. His General Surgery internship and Orthopaedic surgery residency were completed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. To complete his surgical training, he served a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Surgery of the Knee and Shoulder at the Lankenau Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Garfinkel spent many years as Team Physician for a multitude of high school and college sports teams.

A Board certified orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Garfinkel is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Association, and New Jersey Orthopaedic Society. He has published medical journal articles on ACL Reconstruction of the knee and has lectured extensively on various orthopaedic therapies.

Dr. Garfinkel specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, including treatment of torn cartilage, ligament reconstruction and rotator cuff repair. He performs over 400 surgical procedures each year and has received much acclaim for expertise in his field. For eleven years straight (1999-2009), Dr. Matthew Garfinkel has been listed on the Castle Connolly Guide as one of the “Best Doctors in the New York Metropolitan Area”. In June 2002, New York magazine added him to their list of “The Best Doctors in New York”.
